Property Tax Information for 2026-2027

A NOTE TO MADISON TAXPAYERS

Property owners should anticipate a tax increase this year, however, it is not expected to be nearly as significant as last year's.  The Town and its departments worked carefully to made budget reductions where possible while maintaining essential services before bringing the budget to town meeting for it to be voted on.  

We remain committed to responsible spending and doing our best by the Madison taxpayers an encourage residents to get involved in the budget process.

• TAX BILLS AND DUE DATES: Madison's fiscal year runs from July-June.  Tax bills are generally mailed in late August or early September. Payments can be mailed to:
  • Town of Madison - P.O. Box 190 - Madison, ME 04950
• 1ST PAYMENT: The first payment will be due September 15th or 30 days after 'commitment', whichever is later.
• MONTHLY TAX CLUB:  The Tax Club gives the opportunity to eligible property owners to spread tax payments into equal monthly payments.  As long as required payments remain current, interest is not charged to the account.
• HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION:  If you have owned a  home in Maine for at least 12 months and it is your permanent residence, you may qualify for Maine's Homestead Exemption.  The exemption reduces the taxable value of qualifying property.  Applications are available at the Town Office.
• TAX MAPS:  Local tax maps are available in PDF format here on the Town website.
• PROPERTY TAX CARDS: The Town can email property tax cards upon request.
• ADDRESS CHANGES:  Please notify the Town Office when your mailing address changes so that tax bills and notices are sent to the correct address.
• TAX LIEN PROCESS:  If property taxes remain unpaid, Maine law establishes a municipal tax lien process.
  • Mid June: a 30-day lien notice is generally sent.
  • Mid July: if still unpaid, a tax lien may be recorded at the Somerset County Registry of Deeds.
  • 18 months after recording: The lien may mature into automatic foreclosure in accordance with Maine law
• TAX ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS: 
  • PROPERTY TAX FAIRNESS CREDIT, may provide assistance to qualifying residents.  Maine Revenue services: (207) 624-9784

📢 Public Feedback Box Now Available at the Town Office!

The Town of Madison has placed a Public Feedback Box in the Town Office lobby to gather resident input on current ordinance projects.

Current topics include:
• Public Spaces Ordinance
• Setback Ordinance (currently being prepared for a public hearing)

• Comprehensive Plan Feedback

Community feedback is an important part of the ordinance drafting process. It helps the Planning Board, Select Board, and Town Planner better understand the perspectives of residents, including those who may not be able to attend public meetings.

If you are a Madison resident, we encourage you to stop by, complete one of the available feedback forms, and place it in the box. Please keep comments constructive, as every submission will be reviewed and considered during the drafting process.

Hiring Updates

May 19, 2026, the Select Board voted to have Cheyenne Stevens be the New Town Manager.

The finance officer position and town clerk position have both been filled.
